Specialist Programs 

Dance (Approved Special Program - ASP)

  • Offers tuition in a wide range of dance forms with a major focus in contemporary dance
  • Provides professional tutors and choreographers to enrich opportunities for students
  • Dance forms include choreography, improvisation, contemporary, jazz and classical


The course provides a minimum of three performance opportunities per year.

DanceIt also offers skill improvement in:

  • Technique
  • Group interaction
  • Leadership skills
  • Problem Solving
  • Self Confidence and Presentation

Previous Gifted and Talented Students include:

Shaun Tan, International Children’s Book Illustrator, now working for organizations such as Pixar Animations

Shaun has won a host of awards including the International Illustrators of the Future Award, Patricia Wrightson Prize in the NSW Premier’s Prize for Children’s Books, Australian National Science Fiction Best Artist Award and Children’s Book Council Picture Book of the Year Award.

Shaun credits the Balcatta Senior High School Gifted and Talented Education program for providing him with the fundamental skills of art making.

“As well as the advanced technical skills I learnt while in the program, I found the small classes with like-minded students most valuable,” Mr Tan said. “It enabled me to discuss ideas with my peers and helped me develop autonomous skills in problem-solving and art appreciation. Dance 2

Rachel Yau

Already an accomplished international performer, Rachel has danced with the likes of Beyonce, Vanessa Amorosi, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Tom Jones and is currently touring with Kylie Minogue’s “Showgirl” production. “Rachel recently returned to Perth and to Balcatta SHS as a guest tutor in commercial and hip-hop dance.

Rachel credits the Balcatta Senior High School Dance Program with launching her successful international dance career.

“I would have missed out had it not been for the Dance Program at Balcatta…I didn’t know how far you could take it.”

Currently four Balcatta students and two ex-students are performing in STEPS Youth Dance Company’s 2005 season “Mania”.
